How to make my Grandma's German Apple Crumble - Full Recipe!

Have you noticed how our emotions and memories are intimately linked to certain types of foods or recipes we grew up enjoying?
Even though I was born in Argentina, my origins are European.  I'm mostly Italian, but I also have Germany in my heart & blood :)  My dad's mother was from Heidelberg Germany, and she's remembered by her loved ones, not as a great psychologist, which she was, but as a fabulous and dedicated cook!

So, the main reason I learned to make this German Apple Crumble,  is that it's my father's favorite dessert And I'm also glad he's able to remember his mother, through this.

You can all imagine at this point, I'm sharing this family recipe, as something very special to me.
It's really easy and I hope you all try it and send me pictures of your own German Apple Crumbles!

So, as I promised after making the tutorial video  "How to make my Grandma's German Apple Crumble" , here are the complete recipe and step by step notes.

Let's get started with the ingredients!

The described amounts should be enough for 8 medium portions.

To make make my Grandma's German Apple Crumble, you will need:
- 10 Green Apples ( Can't use red ones! )
-  White Sugar  (Brown sugar could work too!  Yum!)
-  Cinnamon
-  Butter
-  Flour
-  Raisins (200 grams or 7 ounces)
-  Almonds (200 grams or 7 ounces)
-  Nuts (200 grams or 7 ounces)
-  Ice Cream (I'd suggest Cream)
-  A Pan
-  An oven pan
-  A bowl
-  A wooden spoon
-  Clean hands ;)

These are the steps!

 1.  Peel  10 apples or as many as you need to fill your oven pan completely.

 2.  Chop each peeled apple in half and then divide each half into 4 pieces.

3.  Place all the chopped pieces in the oven receptacle, so you have an idea if the amount of apples you're using is enough for the selected oven pan.

4. Put 3 pieces of butter on a big pan and turn the heat on for about 1 minute, to start melting the butter.

5.  Add the apples to the pan, add cinnamon and start pre-cooking them. Remember to stir the mix from time to time.

6. Next, add 100 grams or 5.3 ounces of each type of dried fruit (raisins, almonds and nuts) and continue cooking the apples.  Remember the apples will continue to get cooked inside the oven later, so we're looking to cook but only sightly on this stage.  We don't want to make pure!

7. Pour the entire mix inside the oven pan.

8.  Using a bowl, prepare the crumble topping  mixing butter, sugar, flour, and the remaining almonds, nuts and raisins.  Use your hands to mix and form the crumbles, just like you saw me doing on my video .

9.  Go back to the cooked apples in the oven pan, and add the crumble mix on top.  You should have enough crumbles to cover the preparation completely.

10.  This is how the complete apple crumble should look like before putting it into the oven.  As you can see, the crumbles on top need to be cooked.

11. Put the preparation in the oven for about 30 minutes.  Important note!  Now all ovens have the same intensity, so take this as an approximation, and please check on your Apple Crumble every 10 minutes.  You'll know it's done when the topping looks slightly toasted!

12.  Done!  This is the FINAL Apple Crumble!

13.  To complete the dessert, I suggest you serve it warm with Cream Ice Cream on Top!  YUM!

14.  Enjoy and share with your loved ones to create your own memories and family traditions :)
